چکیده

In the eleven years since Harvey and Pagel (1991), evolutionary biologists committed considerable methodological effort into the relationship between phylogeny and numerous types of patterns. Morphology , Shape and Phylogeny and Fossils, Phylogeny, and Form both concern themselves with these issues. The former book deals primarily with the relationship between phylogeny and continuous mor-phometric data, whereas the latter deals with a variety of other issues also. MacLeod and Forey's text stems from the 1999 Second Biennial International conference of the Systematics Association with the same name as the book. This excellent volume includes papers dealing with both aspects of morphometric data and phylogeny: how one can infer phylog-enies or even test phylogenetic hypotheses from morpho-metric data, and how one can reconstruct continuous character evolution over model phylogenies. Of course, these concepts are inexorably linked and several of the papers treat both issues. The authors include many of the movers and shakers of morphometric, phylogenetic and tree-based methodology. Whether continuous

Phylogeny and the Tree of Life

 Phylogeny is the evolutionary history of a species or group of species.  To reconstruct phylogeny, scientists use systematics, an analytical approach to classifying the diversity and determining the evolutionary relationships of living and extinct organisms. o Evidence used to reconstruct phylogenies can be obtained from the fossil record and from morphological, biochemical, and genetic simi...

Haplotype Block Partitioning and tagSNP Selection under the Perfect Phylogeny Model

Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most usual form of polymorphism in human genome.Analyses of genetic variations have revealed that individual genomes share common SNP-haplotypes. Theparticular pattern of these common variations forms a block-like structure on human genome. In this work,we develop a new method based on the Perfect Phylogeny Model to identify haplo...

The Phylogeny of Orussidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) Revisited

The phylogeny of the parasitic wasp family Orussidae is analyzed with a slightly expanded version of a previously published data set. The basal splitting events in the family between two fossil taxa and the extant members are not unambiguously resolved. Intergeneric relationships in general are poorly supported and change under different analytical conditions. This corroborates earlier fi nding...

The Fossil Record and Primate Phylogeny

Fossils provide the only direct evidence of the evolutionary history of primates. A method of phylogeny reconstruction is outlined which is based on an evaluation ofphenetic resemblances of fossils interpreted in their stratigraphiccontext. This stratopheneti¢ approach to phylogeny involves three successive steps: (1) organization of fossils stratigraphically, (2) phenetie linking of similar fo...

Evolving Form and Function: Fossils and Development Proceedings of a symposium honoring Adolf Seilacher for his contributions to paleontology, in celebration of his 80th birthday

Adolf Seilacher’s major contribution to our understanding of the evolution of morphology has been to emphasize that function is an important, but far from complete, explanation of organic form. Recognizing the influence of phylogeny and architecture in addition to adaptation, Seilacher formalized this realization in 1970 as “Konstruktions–Morphologie” (constructional morphology). This “triangul...
